Aaron Wan-Bissaka a.k.a The Spider
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Manchester United
YOUNG. DEFENSIVELY
SOLID. ENGLISH.
Ticking all three boxes,
Wan-Bissaka was the obvious choice for the right-back position at Manchester
United after having a breakthrough year for Crystal Palace under Roy Hodgson.
Nicknamed as Spider while growing up, AWB used to play as a forward during his
initial years at Crystal Palace academy. After transitioning to a full-back he
got his chance to represent Crystal Palace first team in 2017/18 season due to
an injury crisis. Impressing everyone with his pace and defensive abilities, he
won the Crystal Palace young player of the season in just 3 months of his
debut.
Wan-Bissaka cemented his
place in the Palace side last season and announced himself as one of the best
young fullbacks in the league. He had the second highest interceptions in the
league and was only behind Idrisa Gueye and Wilfred Ndidi in successful tackles.
He was also one of the best 1v1 defenders in the league with only 7 players
dribbling past him during the season, a number very high for a fullback. He
also averaged 10.04km per match, a number higher than most Manchester United
players. (That is half a kilometre more than Alexander Arnold and a half less than Robertson
from Liverpool )
Modern day fullbacks are
forced to move up and down the flanks while having the constant threat of being
caught out of position, Wan-Bissaka’s blistering pace and acceleration allows
him to recover much efficiently in such situations. The only missing chink in
AWB’s armor is his effectiveness in the final third. He has a lot of work to do
on his crossing as he currently relies more on overlapping runs and short
passes with his teammates.
Though this is very
important for a fullback, he can certainly develop this aspect of his game with
time. For now both Wan Bissaka and Harry Maguire together offer what United
missed the most last season, “Defensive solidity”.
For
50mn Euros , Manchester United have signed a reliable PL experienced player who
has all the potential to be an important piece in their rebuilding jigsaw.
